Which places you should visit in South Tyrol
South Tyrol offers many festivals, special views and the opportunity to experience a lot at any time of year and in all places. However, some places are particularly worth mentioning. The World Heritage Site that the entire region is proud of is, of course, the Dolomites. These are a real attraction all year round and can be admired from our sun terrace on the Schartner Alm.
A special feature of the UNESCO World Heritage Site is its mineralogical composition. This ensures that completely different colors are visible depending on the light. When the sun rises or sets, a unique play of colors awaits you at any time of year. Glowing shades of red and orange, pink, purple and violet adorn the mountains at this magical hour. The diverse rock formations are impressive. Hiking in the Dolomites is just as popular as winter sports or observing various wild animals, which are represented in a particularly rich variety of species.
There are also special places within the Dolomites, such as the much-photographed Lake Braies. This special natural monument is a protected area and may leave you speechless with its beauty. The mountain lake with its crystal-clear water is often a popular calendar or postcard template. This probably most beautiful place in the Dolomites is rightly known as the “Pearl of the Dolomites”.
Val Gardena is also located in the impressive Dolomites. This is not only a popular winter sports and mountain sports resort. There are also many interesting historical facts to discover. For example, the Val Gardena Museum, where you can gain an insight into the formation of this unique landscape.
Special cities in South Tyrol
You can visit Bolzano's old town to store and marvel. Marvel at the beautiful old houses as you stroll through the arcades. Exclusive shopping opportunities and the incomparable charm of Bolzano will inspire you. Also visit the fruit market, Waltherplatz square, Kornplatz square, the Waaghaus and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Merano is also worth a visit, as the spa town has a thermal baths where you can really unwind. If you are already here, a visit to Tyrol Castle is also worthwhile. The museum has a very interesting history that goes back a long way. Merano is famous for its parks and green spaces and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff, for example, are well worth a visit.
The old town of Bressanone is one of the oldest in the region. The old town really is like something out of a fairy tale and it is simply beautiful here. Bressanone Cathedral is particularly impressive. However, the Neustift monastery puts the proverbial icing on the cake of a visit to Brixen. It has its own winery, which produces great products. In addition to first-class wines, you can also buy natural cosmetics here. Try out the wonderful soaps from the Neustift monastery and benefit from the special nature of regional products.

Out and about in South Tyrol
We would particularly like to recommend the South Tyrolean Wine Road and the Ritten high plateau. Both are definitely worth a visit. The cuisine on the Renon high plateau in particular is a real treat for the palate. You can dine even more exquisitely here at Törggele time. The varied dishes with the unique festivity are something special that you can only experience here in autumn.
The South Tyrolean Wine Road will delight you with its diversity. You can admire historic village centers, for example. But the view of Lake Kaltern is also breathtaking. Not only is it beautiful to look at, but it's also great for swimming. If you get bored of the biopool on the Schartner Alm, why not try a dip in the warmest of South Tyrol's bathing lakes?
With the Ritten Card, which you will of course receive from us at the Schartner Alm, there are endless possibilities. Free rides or discounted tickets on public transport are among the many benefits. You can also get into many museums for less with the card.
Also worth a visit:
- the Messner Mountain Museum
- the earth pyramids of Lengstein
- the Ötzi Museum
If you want to explore South Tyrol geographically, you should not miss a visit to the heart - the geographical center of South Tyrol. From the Rittner Horn, you have an excellent panoramic view of the entire region: from here, you can admire the main Alpine ridge, the Eisack Valley, parts of the Puster Valley, the Dolomites, the city of Bolzano, the Überetsch with the long Mendelkamm, the Meraner Höhenweg, as well as the Texel Group and parts of the Vinschgau. On a clear day, the view extends even further and you can see parts of Austria and as far as Trentino. A wonderful opportunity to get a picture of the various mountain formations, but also of the scenic panorama, the landscape cultures and the architecture.
The Ritten and the Rittner Horn also impress all year round with a cultural and culinary diversity that is second to none.
We look forward to welcoming real South Tyrolean explorers and will be happy to advise you on the various activities during your stay at the SchartnerAlm.
