What a vacation on the alpine pasture in South Tyrol has to offer
The guests at the SchartnerAlm certainly pursue different goals when they decide to spend their vacation on an alpine pasture. Some love camping in the midst of wonderful nature. Accordingly, the campsite on the SchartnerAlm is open all year round.
Those who like luxury and enjoy the magic of the region's mountain huts are in perfect hands in the alpine lodges. These are decorated with different types of wood such as Swiss stone pine, spruce or pine. Authentic, cozy and stylish, they can accommodate different numbers of people. The largest AlmLodge offers space for up to ten travelers. You can even book a jacuzzi to round off your vacation with relaxation on the mountain pasture.
Various activities on the Alm and in the surrounding area
Artists have always captured the beauty of nature. Be it through music, painting, poetry or photography. Landscape painters, photographers and content creators such as travel bloggers love the SchartnerAlm, the atmosphere that prevails here and the hospitality of the South Tyroleans.
Birdwatchers also appreciate the region. From black grouse and woodcock to falcons and the numerous migratory birds that roam the Ritten. You can really observe many beautiful natural spectacles here. Nature on the alpine pasture is therefore perfect for observing on hikes, walks and excursions.
Other encounters with animals are also common here: numerous farm animals such as chicks of all kinds, donkeys, horses and even alpacas are kept and bred here. If you keep calm and attentive on the paths and hiking trails, you might spot a roe deer, a fox, a red deer or even a chamois.
Those who prefer sporting activities have numerous options. Climbing, biking, hiking, archery and much more are on offer here. In winter, classic winter sports are available. At the SchartnerAlm we are well equipped and have a ski depot with boot dryers so that you can start the next round relaxed.
Earth pyramids as a destination
Hikes are always great, but with a special destination, the hikes on your alpine vacation are even better. The earth pyramids, or Piramidi di Terra in Italian, are a special natural wonder and therefore a great destination for your next alpine adventure. There are various points where they can be found and hikes classified as either "easy" or "medium" lead here. The earth pyramids were formed in a special way. It is not entirely clear how long it took for them to form, nor how old these works of art of nature can become. However, a period of around 1,000 years is certainly conceivable.
A certain clay soil with embedded rock is responsible for the formation of the earth pyramids. In dry weather conditions, this soil is also dry and correspondingly hard. However, when it rains, the formerly hard soil turns into a kind of mud, which is then eroded or washed away by the rain.
Harder rock deposits, which are naturally not as water-soluble as the clay soil, are exposed by the removal of the clay. Although there is more clay beneath them, this is protected by the rock. This is how these true marvels are gradually created through the erosion.
However, they do not last forever, because as soon as the covering rock slips, falls or is otherwise removed, the earth pyramid is also affected by the next rainfall. With every rainfall, the pyramid becomes a little smaller as more clay soil is removed.
Wolfsgrubener Seel excursion destination
Depending on the season, you can go fishing, swimming or ice skating here. Lake Wolfsgruben offers a variety of different activities and is not far from the SchartnerAlm. The lake is around three and a half meters deep at its deepest points and in summer the water on the surface has a temperature of around 25 °C. With the RittenCard, which guests at the SchartnerAlm receive from us, swimming is even free. In winter, ice skating is great fun here.
Fishing in the lake requires a license and day ticket; a license with stamp costs 16 euros.
The bee museum is a special excursion destination
Bees are among the most important creatures on our planet, as was officially confirmed in 2024. So it's no wonder that the little insects have a growing fan base. Bees are irreplaceable and indispensable when it comes to preserving biodiversity. Although they are known for producing honey, their function as pollinators is much more important.
The bee museum in Wolfsgruben is also one of the attractions that you can visit for free with the RittenCard. The Plattner Hof, where the museum is located, is over 600 years old. Here, the life of earlier generations is vividly depicted and the visit is equally exciting for children and adults.
If you want to learn even more after this visit, you can visit the bee trail. This is located right next to the museum and is also extremely educational. The museum is usually open from the end of March to the end of October.
